What it is
Daytime running lights (DRLs) are the lights at the front of the car that come on automatically when it is running, so other road users see you sooner in daylight.
A DRL change can mean replacing a unit that has failed or dimmed, or swapping to a different style of light. What can be fitted depends on the car and how its lighting is controlled.
Many modern cars monitor their lighting circuits, so a new light may need wiring in carefully or coding to avoid warning lights. Lighting is also covered by rules on how vehicles must be lit, so it is worth talking through the options first.
When to book it
- One or both DRLs have stopped working or look dim

Questions answered
Do DRLs have to work for the MOT?
On cars first used from March 2018, daytime running lights are checked in the MOT, so a failed DRL can mean a fail. It is worth getting them sorted before the test.
Will new DRLs cause a warning light?
They can on cars that monitor their bulb circuits. Wiring them in carefully, and coding where needed, avoids that.
Can I bring my own lights?
Yes. Let us know what you have when you book, and we will check it suits your car before fitting.
