What an MOT looks at
The MOT is the DVSA’s annual safety and emissions check. It covers, among other things:
- Lights, indicators and the horn
- Brakes, steering and suspension
- Tyres and wheels, seatbelts and seats
- Windscreen, wipers and washers, and mirrors
- Exhaust, fuel system and emissions
- Body and structure, doors, and the registration plates
It does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. That is what a service is for.

Check your MOT history
Every MOT on record, the mileage at each one, and when the current MOT runs out. Free, straight from the DVSA.
About your retest
If your vehicle stays with the test centre for repairs and is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. Certain faults also qualify for a free partial retest when you return by the end of the next working day.
If you take your vehicle elsewhere for repairs and return within 10 working days, a partial retest fee may apply. In other cases, you need a full retest and pay the full test fee.
Questions answered
How early can I get my MOT done?
Up to a month minus a day before your current MOT runs out, and you keep the same renewal date. For example, if it runs out on 15 May, the earliest is 16 April.
What is a pre-MOT check?
A full inspection before the test to identify any issues, so they can be fixed first. It helps you avoid unexpected failures and expensive retests.
Does an MOT replace a service?
No. An MOT checks roadworthiness and emissions on the day of the test. A service is separate maintenance for your car.
What do I need to bring?
Just the vehicle. We look everything up from the registration.
