What it is

Your engine control unit (ECU) runs the engine to a set of maps for fuelling, ignition timing and, on turbo cars, boost. Manufacturers set these conservatively to suit every market and fuel quality. A remap adjusts them to get more from the engine, usually more power and torque.

Stage 1 is a software change on an otherwise standard car. Stage 2 usually pairs the map with supporting hardware such as intake, exhaust or intercooler upgrades. Stage 3 typically involves bigger changes like an uprated turbo and fuelling. On a car with an automatic gearbox, the transmission control unit (TCU) has its own software, which can be tuned as well.

A remap only works well on a healthy engine. Existing faults, worn parts or a slipping clutch show up quickly once there is more torque, which is why every tune has pre and post tuning checks.

  • You want the gearbox software to keep up with the engine
  • You want honest advice on which stage suits your car and your plans

How we handle it

Send your registration number for a quote, with what you want from the car and any modifications already fitted. Abid looks at the details and the car itself to check it is healthy and to advise on what makes sense.

You get a clear price before any work starts, including anything the car needs first. Once you approve it, the car is booked in and you are kept updated throughout.

Questions answered

Do I need to tell my insurer about a remap?

Yes. A remap is a modification, and insurers expect to be told. Not declaring it can invalidate your cover, so speak to your insurer before the work is done.

What is the difference between Stage 1, 2 and 3?

Stage 1 is software only on a standard car. Stage 2 usually pairs the map with supporting hardware like intake, exhaust or intercooler upgrades. Stage 3 generally involves major hardware such as a larger turbo and fuelling changes.

What is TCU tuning?

The TCU (transmission control unit) decides how and when an automatic gearbox changes gear. Gearbox tuning adjusts its software, often alongside an engine remap.

Will a remap affect my manufacturer warranty?

It can. Manufacturers may decline warranty claims related to modified engines, so check your warranty terms if the car is still covered.
