What it is
A major service is for when the car is due the bigger items on its maintenance schedule. Ours covers the oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and fuel filter (if applicable), plus a vehicle health check, fluid top ups, an interior hoover and a diagnostics print out.
Some cars also have big-ticket scheduled items such as a cambelt and water pump at a set age or mileage. These vary a lot between models, so they are checked against your car’s own schedule and discussed with you before any work is booked.
It is the service that keeps a car healthy for the long haul, and the one most worth doing properly on an older or higher-mileage car.
When to book it

How often do I need a major service?
Typically every two years or at a higher mileage interval, but it depends entirely on the manufacturer. Your service book or the car’s own service indicator is the guide.
Is a cambelt change part of a major service?
Not automatically. Cambelt intervals are set separately by the manufacturer by age and mileage, and some engines use a chain instead. It is checked and quoted separately if your car is due.
