BMW M3 in the AbidWorks bay under the hex lights, in for a gearbox and front differential service

BMW M3: gearbox and front diff service

ZF gearbox fluid and filter, front differential oil, genuine parts throughout.

This BMW M3 came in for two jobs that are easy to put off and expensive to ignore: a gearbox service and a front differential service. Both done with genuine parts.

The gearbox

The automatic gearbox in the M3 is a ZF unit, and the fluid inside it does the hard work: it cools the clutch packs, keeps the valve body clean and gives you those quick, clean shifts. Over the miles it breaks down and picks up wear material, and the shifts start to feel it.

We drained the old fluid, fitted a new ZF sump pan with the filter built in and a fresh set of bolts, then refilled with ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8, the fluid ZF specify for this gearbox, and set the level to specification.

The front differential

The front diff was drained and refilled with BMW Group Hypoid Axle Oil G5, the oil BMW specify for it. A small job on its own, and worth doing while the car is on the ramp.

Why genuine parts

On a gearbox like this, the right fluid is not a nice-to-have. The wrong grade, or a pattern filter that does not seal properly, is how a service turns into a repair. We used ZF's own fluid and filter kit and BMW's own axle oil, so the gearbox gets exactly what it was designed for.
